The efforts
of José Antonio Valverde in preserving Doñana and building a research institute
came to reality in January 1965, when the Doñana Biological Station (DBS) was created by José Ibañez Martín (then President of CSIC) as a
CSIC research institute devoted to the study of terrestrial ecology.
The scientific activity of the DBS focused originally in Doñana region and its
environment, soon expanding its activities
to other systems both inside and outside
Spain.
